How Important Is Wellness and Wellbeing?

Wellness and Wellbeing | Benoit Morin

In today’s world, wellness and wellbeing are more important than ever. But many people who might need it the most don’t know whether to trust their gut or what they feel is genuine. Benoit Morin PHSA, believes that a considerable part of the problem is a lack of awareness: “People are so disconnected from their bodies and health. There’s no going back to the body’s natural state because we’re not in it.”

Benoit began his wellness journey after his father died, and now he is doing every bit of his to make this world a better place for living with health care.

Why Wellness and Wellbeing Must Not Be Neglected?

Why Wellness and Wellbeing Must Not Be Neglected

  1. Overweight and obesity statistics are climbing, but it’s not because Canadians are eating more. Most people eat better, but some states have a much higher obesity rate than others. The health of the planet is at stake because of it.
  1. Canada is battling an obesity crisis. As the population gets heavier, diabetes is becoming a national health issue. Once rare, the condition causes complications like blindness and nerve damage. Type 2 diabetes can be helped with lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise, but many Canadians aren’t aware of it.
  1. There are many ways to take advantage of the healing power of nature: spending time in green spaces, gardening and eating more plant foods. These activities also help keep stress levels low.
  1. Stress is a killer. People who are stressed out may get sick more often than those who are relaxed and comfortable with life. Chronic stress raises blood pressure, weakens the immune system and increases the risk of heart disease.
  1. An unhealthy diet can put you at a much higher risk of premature death. The culprit? Lack of fruits and vegetables. People who eat poorly are more likely to develop heart disease, strokes, diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer.
  1. Stress and lack of sleep can lead to weight gain. People who get eight hours a night of rest each night have lower levels of cortisol—a hormone that causes weight gain by shutting down the body’s ability to burn fat.
  1. Spending time outdoors is a great way to help you relax and destress. If you’re new to the idea, start by going for short walks in natural areas.
  1. A healthy diet is loaded with fruits and vegetables. You don’t need to focus on fancy diets or expensive supplements: eat well by getting lots of nutrients like vitamin C, potassium, magnesium and calcium.
  1. Eating a well-balanced diet can keep inflammation at bay. It can cause many chronic diseases, including cancer, arthritis and diabetes.
  1. A healthy diet is the most effective way to prevent heart disease. Studies have shown that fruits and vegetables have a direct positive effect on lowering cholesterol and blood pressure. Reducing your intake of simple sugars, trans fats, animal fats, and processed foods mitigates the risk

What Do We Need To Do To Maintain Good Health?

Maintain Good Health

Benoit Morin, health executive with the Canadian Pharmacists Association, argues that a healthy diet is the most crucial part of good health care.

Physicians, pharmacists and dietitians are essential parts of the wellness process. “The whole wellness model has to include everyone,” says Morin. “A pharmacist can’t take care of you alone.” He also recommends that all Canadians have a general health check-up every year.

Does taking supplements make you healthy? No, but it’s not entirely useless either.

Follow these few tips to maintain good health:

  1. A good healthcare professional will help you maintain a healthy lifestyle. Ask your pharmacist or family doctor for ideas and advice, or keep your eyes open for specialized clinics in your area.
  1. If you follow a few simple dietary rules, your body will do the rest. “Eating nutrient-rich foods like fruits and vegetables is the best insurance policy you can have,” says Benoit Morin, president of PHSA Canada.
  1. Take responsibility for your health care. It means you should be able to advise yourself on things like nutrition, exercise and sleep habits — and be comfortable talking about it with your doctor.
  1. Visit your family doctor regularly: they are the best person to sort out any issues that may arise and act as a resource for advice and suggestions on healthy living.
  1. Remember that taking supplements isn’t the same as eating a balanced diet of fruits and vegetables. If you’re taking supplements, you should also eat lots of fruits and vegetables.
